How do I begin the process? How does it work?1. The first step is to fill out the form on this page. 2. We will reach out and make sure the date and time are available and answer any questions you have. 3. When you are ready you tell us "book it". We don't need all the details at this point, just enough so you are ready to hold the room for a specific date and time. 4. We work out the details. This mostly means determining what you want to do for food and the drink tab. We can do this right when you book or later as the event approaches. That is it. We keep it simple here at Backpocket.
-
Tell me about the space? The event room is located on the backside of the bar. It is a flex space that can be altered in size to fit your party. No matter which size you chose, the patio will be accessible to your group. 40-60 guest. We setup a row of benches to divide the west side of the bar in 1/2. 70-125 guests. This would be the whole side of the bar. We only offer this at off peak times. Each request is done on a case by case basis. Full buyout - It is possible to buyout the full space for very large parties. Each request is done on a case by case basis.
-
What are the fees?We keep fees low. We just want you here having a good time and buying beer. Room Fees 1 section. 20-40 $75 2 sections. 40-60 $150 3 sections. 60-120 $225 Buyout - TBD Other Fees Early open - $100 (may come with min. spend) Gratuity - Automatic 20% service applied to the party tab, including food, drink, and fees. That is it. No other surprises.
-
What times slots are available?Morning 8-10 (early open) Lunch 11-2 Afternoon 3-6 Evening 7-10 If you need multiple slots to accommodate your group a $250/$300 fee will be added, (depending on the size of the group).
-
How do I check availability? The calendar on this page are always up to date. You are always welcome to directly contact us through the booking request form to confirm.
-
I want to see the place before I book, can I do this?Sure, come in during any regular ours. If you would like to come in when we are closed, just contact the event manager once you have started a inquiry.
-
Can I bring in outside food? No. Food is available through the Bytes Kitchen
-
Can I see a menu of your catering options? It will be released on the website later. But in short, we will have pizza, tacos, wings, burgers and appetizers.
-
What if I only want to bring in cake? You are welcome to bring in cake but $200 catering order minimum is required for all booked parties.
-
When must I have my food order in?We prefer if we settle on the food 2 weeks in advance so we can make sure it is all ready when you arrive.
-
Can my guests order food just off the menu? For formal events we require guests to order off the catering menu. With groups that large we can't have everyone ordering off the menu at the same time as the kitchen can not handle that burst of volume.
-
What are the drink options? Do you have more then beer?Backpocket focuses on beer but has other options both alcoholic and non alcoholic. Beer - We make our own beer in Coralville and always have around 20 beers on tap. Options range from simple lagers to fruited sours and IPA's. We do carry domestic bottles (Bud Light, Busch Light, Seltzer and Cider). Liquor - We have a selection of a dozen liquors. We combine these with our homemade sodas (see below) to create signature cocktails. We also have a basic set of mixers to craft what you desire. This includes Bloody Mary's and Mimosa's for early events! Wine - A simple selection of 5 wines. Non Alcoholic - We make our own Root Beer and Ginger beer as well as offer Pepsi products.
-
What are the prices for drinks?Beer Domestic Draft - $6 Backpocket Beer - $6-$7 Wine - $7 Liquor Rail drinks - $4-$5 Signature Cocktails - $8 Non Alcoholic Pepsi Products - $3 Backpocket Sodas -$4
-
Can I see what beers you will have on tap?The beers are always changing as we make new brews. You can see the current list here.
-
Can I bring in outside drinks? No. The only outside beverages allowed would be bottled water. All other drinks must be purchased at the bar.
-
Can I include Duckpin lanes for my party?Yes. Your party is allowed to rent out 1 lane per section of the event room you book. Duckpin is not directly adjacent to the event room so those who play will have to split off from the main party. Rentals associated with parties are done by the hour and independent of the general public waitlist. The price is $40 per hour per lane. When you are ready to bowl you simple head up to the host and you will get the next lane, which you can play until your party ends. If additional lanes are desired beyond what is included as part of the party you are welcome to have your guests sign up via the standard waiting list. We must maintain lanes open for the general public to have a chance to play, but no reason your guests can't get in line like anyone else. If you don't want to include the cost of your guests bowling, that is fine. They are able to simply sign up same way as the general public. Be aware that if you go this way the lanes will not be held specifically for your group, it will all just be part of the public waitlist system.
-
Can I rent out the Arcade? Not really. Must be left open to the public. One exception is on Mondays. Inquire to request pricing.
-
How does the arcade work? Can I pre pay for games? Can I add it to the tab?The arcade is retro and runs off quarters. There are machines that can get you all the change you need. Bringing in money for quarters is the best way to let your guests play. There is not a way to add this to the single tab.
-
Do I need to pay in advance? Deposit?Nope. We keep it simple. Just pay the day of your event.
-
What are my options for running a tab?Several options. Cash Bar - Your guests pay individually. Can be done for both food ordered off the menu and drink. Open Tab - You pay for everything. Restricted Tab - You pay but put limits. Limits can be done in many ways. Ticket System - You give your guest tickets which act as access to your tab. You are not charge for the tickets, but instead pay for what they order. Total Dollar amount - You place a cap on the tab. After that point it switches to cash bar. Limit type of Items - For example a soda only tab with alcohol as cash bar.
-
How does the ticket system work?We give you tickets that you can this dispense to your guests as you see fit. The ticket acts as pass to your tab, with the cost of the item bought being added to that tab. The tickets themselves are free, so if people don't use them, you don't pay for them.
-
Can I restrict what can be put on the tab?Yes. The tab is yours and you can pay or not pay for whatever you like. Common variations are drinks only, or soda only. But you can say "nothing but beer" or "no shots". We do it however you would like.
-
What prevents random people from putting drinks on my tab? This has not ever been a problem for us. But if it is a concern for you the ticket system is an added layer of protection. You give the tickets out so no random stranger can add things to the tab.
-
How is gratuity appliedAll tabs associated with a reserved party will be subject to a 20% auto gratuity (food, drink and fees). This does not apply to anything ordered by guest in the case of a cash bar.
-
What are the hours for minors?Backpocket is family friendly. We shift to 21 only at 9:00 PM. However private parties are a bit different. We can not have minors outside the private area, but they can still be in the event room. This is similar to a wedding venue at that point.

Can I decorate? We welcome people to decorate the spaces to make them special for their party. Balloons, Signs, Posters, Slideshows, and more are all welcome. Two basic rules do apply. 1. Decorate only what you can then tear down in a timely fashion. This is very important on afternoon time slots. 2. No confetti or glitter or those little circles that you spread on tables... These are just too hard to clean. Don't bring ballons filled with these things, they will be popped. 3. If you use tape, don't apply it to drywall, it tears off the paint. 4. No Mylar Ballons.... they never come done
